Cardiovascular protective effects of resveratrol

In the folk, people use Polygonum cuspidatum rich in resveratrol to treat and prevent hyperlipidemia and arteriosclerosis.

Studies have shown that resveratrol mainly exerts anti-atherosclerosis, prevention of coronary heart disease and cardiovascular protection from the following aspects:

1. Regulate blood lipids;

2. Inhibit platelet aggregation and promote fibrinolysis;

3. Protect the vascular endothelium and inhibit the proliferation of endothelial cells;

4. Protect vascular smooth machine cells and inhibit their proliferation;

5. Anti-leukocyte;

6. Antagonize the effect of endothelin-1 (ET-1);

7. Anti-oxidation of low-density lipoprotein.

In experiments with endotoxin- or thrombin-induced platelet activation, following pre-incubation of platelets washed with resveratrol, adhesion of lipopolysaccharide alone or lipopolysaccharide and thrombin-activated platelets to collagen was blocked at physiological plasma concentrations. Platelets pretreated with resveratrol were also blocked from adhering to fibrinogen.

Resveratrol and its derivatives are a class of phytoalexins that have been studied more in recent years, and their cardiovascular protective effect has gradually become a research hotspot, which is expected to make a difference in the development of drugs for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
